THE BENCH · TOOL No. 09

Extract Text from PDF

Get the words out of a PDF so you can copy, search, or quote them. Paste the result into notes, an email, or a document. It runs in your browser, with no upload and no sign-up.

Drop your file here or tap to choose it.
It is opened on your device only — nothing is uploaded.

Honest limits

  • This works on PDFs that carry a real text layer — the kind made by a computer program, sometimes called born-digital. A scanned page is a photograph of words, not text, so there is nothing to pull out directly.
  • For scans, the Toolkit's OCR reads the photograph and turns it into text. It is slower, and it works best on a computer.

How it works

  1. Choose the PDF you want text from.
  2. Let the tool read the pages and pull out the text.
  3. Check the result and copy what you need.
  4. Paste it into your notes, email, or document.

Questions people ask

How do I copy text out of a PDF?

Open Extract Text, choose your file, and copy the words it pulls out. Then paste them wherever you need them.

Why does my scanned PDF give me no text?

A scanned page is a photograph of words, not real text, so there is no text layer to pull out. For scans, use the Toolkit's OCR, which reads the photograph — slower, and best on a computer.

Will the layout stay the same?

No. You get the words, in reading order, without the original layout. For the page exactly as it looks, keep the PDF itself.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Text is pulled out in your browser on your own device. Your file never leaves it.
